Professor 12
Dr. Shirley Guevarra, Professor 12 and current Dean of the College of Home Economics, is a faculty of the Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management, University of the Philippines-Diliman. She started her academic career in the University in 1998 and her additional duties as faculty-administrator in 2006. She first served as Acting Director of the UP Diliman Business Concessions Office from 2006-2007, then as HRIM Department Chair from October 2007 - October 2013. She also served as Officer-in-Charge of the UP Diliman Office of Student Housing from June 2014-November 2019. She was also appointed as member of the Board of Overseers by former Presidents Alfredo Pascual and Danilo Concepcion from
2011 to 2021.
Guevarra is a recipient of the One UP Professorial Chair for Teaching and Research Award (2022-2024); UP Diliman Centennial Professorial Chair Award (2018-2019; 2017-2018 and 2014-2015), the UP Diliman Centennial Faculty Grant (2020-2021; 2019-2020; 2016-2017; 2014-2015), and the UP Diliman International Publication Award (2022, 2019 and 2016). She was also awarded the Golden Key for Research Excellence Award by the Council of Hotel and Restaurant Educators of the Philippines (COHREP) in 2010.
Her research interests are on food safety/hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP) system, environmental management, property management, human resource management, food and culture and food tourism. She has authored/co-authored 19 journal articles, book chapters and two (2) coffee table books in local and international publications.
Currently, she serves as Vice President of the COHREP where she has been a member of the Board since 2011. She is on her second term as Director of Membership Services and Development of the Asia Pacific Council of Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Education (APacCHRIE), where she also served as Director of Education (2020-2021) and Philippine Country Representative (2017- 2019). She is also the Philippine Country Representative in the Asia Pacific Tourism Association or APTA (2007-present) and concurrently as External Secretary (2011-present). She is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research(2007-present).
Guevarra obtained her master’s degree in Food Service Administration and PhD degree in Philippine Studies from the UP College of Home Economics and the UP Asian Center, in 2000 and 2011, respectively. She is also an alumna of the Bachelor of Science in Food Technology program of the Philippine Women’s University, Manila. She took Advance Seminar on Different Hotel Management in Tourism at the Hosteleria de Compostela in Galicia, Spain.
